New Old Bungalow
New Old Bungalow is an top to bottom re-imagining of a 1940's era single story kit house. Completed in 2009, the finished house is 3 times larger than the original at 2,400 square feet on two floors. The project is located on a typical 50’ x 100’ mostly level parcel in Ladd's Addition Conservation District.
The design strategically expands existing rooms like drawers pulled from a chest. These rooms are vaulted to conform to a new gabled roof that houses a new story, equal in size to the footprint of the original structure. New window groups are placed high to the ceiling to maxime daylight into the floorplate. A custom staircase fashioned from white oak defines the edge of the new living/dining zone.
